Enhancing the Student Experience
Director, Student Engagement & Wellness, Marissa Carrasco
I started as director, student engagement & wellness, last year. Since then, a common thread I’ve heard in conversation with colleagues and peers at Selkirk College and other institutions is that student stress is on the rise.
As I’m relatively new to this role, it can be hard to contextualize these comments. Luckily, there is data! According to our internal Student Engagement Survey, students reporting challenges with staying motivated are at a 12-year high. Additionally, the percentage of students reporting that mental health is a challenge to their academic success has increased from 39% in 2021 to 52% this year.
Those numbers point to a worrying trend. The good news is that research has shown that a strong sense of college community has a big impact on student well-being.
As we prepare for a new fall term, note a few of the many ways you can enhance the student experience and help build a strong Selkirk College community.
- Participate in Get Connected. Let’s work together to give new students a warm Selkirk College welcome and get the new academic year started in a good way! There are many ways to become a Get Connected ambassador and help incoming students feel that sense of belonging that is vital to their well-being.
- Let students know about the many events across all campuses and learning centres! The Student Experience Team (SET), schools and departments organize a multitude of events all year-round. Help keep students in the loop. Take a few minutes in class to let them know what’s happening or point them to the events calendar.
- Sponsor a student club. We encourage students to start clubs that cater to their interests to foster engagement, relationships, skills and fun. Student clubs with employee sponsors are more likely to get funding and be successful.
- Join in community events. The college often takes part in community-building events, such as parades and hockey games. Keep your eyes on the newsletter for engagement opportunities and take part!
- Take part in Convocation. Convocation is the day to celebrate students for their hard work and academic success. Help make the day extra special.
As employees, our collective effort in building a sense of community and prioritizing wellness will not only enhance academic success but also nurture resilient and compassionate individuals.
Together, we can build a community where every student feels valued, supported and empowered to reach their full potential.
