How did you make your way to Selkirk College?
I've always been interested in post-secondary education—I think there's a greater good in trying to attract students and promote post-secondary. As a graphic designer, you can promote and sell a lot of ideas and products. The idea of helping a generation find their calling and invest in themselves feels right.
Describe one of your favourite Selkirk College moments.
Some of my favourite moments are working outside of my office, like working at Get Connected and Convocation. It brings me back to the reason why I'm here: the students. At Convocation, you get to see and feel the students' excitement and at Get Connected, they are new and full of nervous excitement. Any interactions with students are the highlight!
What's the best advice you have ever received?
I love hearing peoples' perspectives, whether I take their advice or not. It makes me think about the road they've taken and their experience—there's a lot of value in that. Now that I have kids who are teenagers and I'm thinking about where their path will take them, it's reassuring to hear about all the experiences that people have had and the seasons that have built their character and who they are.
What is something you enjoy doing outside of work?
I enjoy learning new things—trying a new class, a new sport. Recently, I started curling with Brier. Five years ago, I started taking violin lessons. I also starting playing disc golf. Inspired by my son, I've started to enjoy hockey.
Please share a non-work-related recommendation! Let us know one of your favourite shows, albums, books—or your preferred treat from the cafeteria.
One of my favourite coffee shops in Castlegar was Humble Bean—I loved the atmosphere and the coffee. My day-to-day order would be a decaf Americano. I love the taste of coffee, but I can't handle too much caffeine. I love the vibe at coffee shops. Coffee shops bring people together!
