Safe Destruction of Documents

If you have documents containing personal information, they must be destroyed for security purposes. Please dispose of them (un-shredded) in secure Shred-it bins on campus. These bins are collected and securely disposed of every few weeks by Shred-it, and a certificate of destruction is provided for each collection.

Kootenay Society of Community Living and SOAR students, who pick up recycling weekly, will no longer handle confidential documents, as it is not considered secure, according to college security and FOIP guidelines.

Please do not shred documents yourself, as we do not have a way to dispose of shredded paper securely and will not receive a secure disposal certificate for pre-shredded paper. Please avoid storing boxes of confidential recycling in your office throughout the year, as this is also not considered secure from a privacy and security standpoint.

Shred-It Bin Locations

  • Silver King Campus: Main floor of classroom block (hallway)
  • Castlegar Campus: O-Wing staff room and Administration staff kitchen
  • Trail Campus: Main floor front drop-in office area
  • Tenth Street Campus: Patenaude front office

What Types of Documents Need to be Destroyed?

Personal information is any recorded information that uniquely identifies you (or anyone), such as name, address, telephone number, age, sex, race, religion, sexual orientation, disability, fingerprints or blood type. Any document with personal information must be appropriately destroyed. If your documents do not contain this information, it is safe to go in the recycling.

If a document only contains a few pages with confidential information, please securely dispose of the pages with the information in a bin. The rest of the document can be recycled, which is significantly less costly than secure document shredding.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Campus Management.
