Murray Sinclair, a distinguished figure in Canada's journey toward reconciliation, passed away on November 4, 2024, at the age of 73. As the first Indigenous judge in Manitoba and chair of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, Sinclair was instrumental in bringing the dark history of residential schools to light. His dedication and hard work laid the foundation for reconciliation efforts across the country, including in educational organizations like ours.
Sinclair consistently emphasized the important role of education in both perpetuating and healing historical injustices. He famously said, "Education got us into this mess, and education will get us out of it."
His legacy challenges us to continue the vital work of Indigenization and decolonization at Selkirk College and beyond, honouring the truth he helped uncover and the path to reconciliation he illuminated for us.
