Modernized Classrooms Aim to Promote Learning

You’re Invited to See the New Spaces at an Open House

Two classrooms on the Castlegar Campus will look very different when students arrive for the first day of classes.

Rooms 219 and 220 in the Sentinel Wing have been modernized and reconfigured thanks to a project by the Teaching & Learning Centre and Facilities & Business Services. The rooms now feature mobile seating, fresh colours, images of nature and updated technology options for students and employees—changes that aim to empower students and instructors to create a more equitable and comfortable environment for learning.

Classroom Impact on Teaching and Learning

The updated classrooms are part of a research project that aims to study the classroom environment's impact on effective teaching and learning. It involves three steps:

  1.  Analyzing pre-change data from instructors and students.
  1. Analyzing post-change data from instructors and students.
  1. Producing recommendations for the greater Selkirk College community.

The project draws from existing literature (Paul, 2012) regarding classroom design and its impact on teaching and learning. The results of the post-change research will be provided to the greater college community.

Employees are welcome to visit the classrooms and check out the changes at an Open House on Wednesday, August 28, from 9 to 11:45 am before the Employee Welcome Back Event.
