Food Security Over the Holidays
Help Students Access Resources
—From the desk of Marissa Carrasco
As we approach the holiday season, we know students may face food security challenges. There are resources both at the college and in our local communities that can help support students—now and all year-round. Please encourage students to check out these resources, which include the Selkirk College Students’ Union Food Pantry and food banks in the West Kootenay and Boundary regions.
This year, the college is partnering with students in the Steps to Opportunities, Academics & Readiness (SOAR) Program at the Silver King Campus to expand the free food hamper initiative they have been holding for the past few years. Each free hamper contains food for breakfast, lunch and dinner, with some snacks too.
If you know a student who could benefit from a hamper this holiday, please encourage them to fill out this form. Please note that students must complete this form themselves. Forms must be submitted by Wednesday, November 27, and hampers will be distributed between Wednesday, December 4, to Friday, December 6. There will be pick-up locations in Castlegar, Nelson and Trail.
There is a limited number of hampers available. Please help us get them to the students who need them.
This initiative is funded by popcorn sales held by the SOAR students at the Silver King Campus and supplemented by the funds raised during Selkirk College Giving Days in March and April each year. To support food security initiatives, donate to Giving Day.
