Enrolment Numbers and Labour Adjustments
–From the desk of Taya Whitehead, Vice-President, Education & Students
The impacts of changes to federal immigration policy affecting international student recruitment are being felt at Selkirk College and at post-secondary institutions across the country.
As we work to mitigate the effects on programming and employment, we know that the uncertainty is causing anxiety across the college community. This is an incredibly difficult period, and we are committed to supporting employees, students and community members through this transition to the best of our ability.
A substantial reduction in international enrolment is necessitating college-wide labour adjustments, starting with SCFA and BCGEU employees. Prior to any layoff notices being issued, all members of SCFA and BCGEU instructors in the School of Hospitality & Tourism will be canvassed from January 15 to 29, 2025, to see if we can find volunteer solutions to help us to potentially reduce or even avoid the need for layoffs. The collective agreements provide a menu of strategies that will be considered, including workload reduction, unpaid leave of absence, voluntary severance and early retirement.
If you think you should have received a canvas letter and you didn’t, please reach out to HR. Those who are potentially impacted by layoffs have already been notified by their dean.
The college continues to work closely with union executives as we navigate this changing landscape. The Executive Leadership Team is focused on a strategic approach to decision-making that will allow us to continue offering high-quality, accessible programming that aligns with labour-market needs for the long-term. We’re also doing advocacy work with other colleges, community partners, elected officials and the provincial government.
We welcome your ideas and will update suggestions from the college community and frequently asked questions.
Thank you for your patience and compassion during this time.
