Bridging the Gap to Doctor Access

Meeting Medical Needs in a Rural Context

While living, working and playing in the West Kootenay and Boundary regions is wonderful, in recent years, it has become difficult to secure a family doctor.

This can create a ripple of consequences, including difficulty in taking advantage of extended health benefits that require a doctor's referral.

The HR Benefits team raised this challenge with Manulife, who highlighted a couple of suggestions:

  • Access a physician or nurse practitioner at a walk-in clinic in a nearby town.
  • Access a physician online through TELUS Health MyCare. (Please note this is only an option for individuals with MSP coverage.)

There is another option for employees who have enrolled in benefits with Manulife: Teladoc Medical Experts. Teladoc’s network of experts spans 450 medical specialties and can provide guidance on any kind of medical concern or question. This service is provided as part of your overall benefits package. Get more information about accessing Teladoc at the bottom of the benefits page.

And finally, while it may not help you with your immediate needs, as part of Selkirk College, you can feel proud that we are investing in the future of rural healthcare through the exceptional Rural Pre-Medicine Program. Know a promising student? Send them our way!
