Selkirk College Helps Lead Charge in Coldest Night of the Year

It’s cold out there! The Coldest Night of the Year (CNOY) is on Saturday, February 23. CNOY is a family-friendly national walk-a-thon that helps you raise funds for charities that serve hungry, homeless and hurting people in our towns, and in 136 communities across Canada.

Students in the Selkirk College Nursing Program and School of Human Services want to invite you to participate in the CNOY event in your hometown of Castlegar or Nelson. This year both cities will be hosting their own Coldest Night of the Year event on February 23. The goal is to participate in developing healthier and more inclusive communities.

Coldest Night 2019

Selkirk College students and staff have been one of the driving forces behind local Coldest Night of the Year events and will continue that support on February 23.

There are many ways to be involved and to show your support. You can register to walk with the option of fundraising or not. When you register, you can join an existing team or make your own team and invite friends to join. Volunteers are needed with many volunteer options to choose from. If you can’t make the walk you can make a one-time donation to a team or a specific person. Visit https://cnoy.org/home to register or learn more about the event.

Join student organizers on February 23 in Castlegar or Nelson. On event night, registration opens at 4 p.m. where you will receive your CNOY toque and the walk starts at 5:15 p.m.. The walk consists of a 2 km, 5 km, or 10 km loop walk with rest stops and warm drinks along the way. There will be opening/closing ceremonies, a fire at the halfway point, and a light meal at the end of the walk.

The money from donations will go to local community resources. In Castlegar, the money is going to Castlegar & District Community Services Society who are addressing the needs of the Castlegar community by using the funds for two community resources: Castlegar Youth Action Network and Homelessness Partnering Program. In Nelson, the funds will go to Nelson Cares that operates on behalf of the community to preserve and maintain affordable housing in Nelson. Donations will go to the Room To Live, a Nelson CARES project for creating and maintaining affordable housing.
