Experiential learning has been practiced since ancient times. Related to problem-based and service learning, learning by experience can add value to student learning by diversifying the learning modes! Reflection is a key component that is often missed.

Contemplative Practices – Discussion Group
The group started in 2011 when three faculty attended the Summer Institute of the Association for Contemplative Mind in Higher Education in 2011. Other instructors have since joined the group. Two contemplative practice summer Institutes have been organized and in 2014 a monthly discussion group focused on the book Contemplative Practices in Higher Education by Daniel Barbezat, which is available in the library.
Design Thinking and Maker Space
School of the Arts Chair Jason Taylor began working on a “maker space” at Selkirk College as he ignited his own “do it yourself” nature. Realizing what an impact the related concept of design thinking could have on student learning in all disciplines the Teaching and Learning Institute helped organize a design thinking day for educators. Watch the Maker Day video and be in contact if you’d like to learn more about utilizing design thinking as part of your students’ learning process. Plans for more maker spaces at the college and in the community are afoot.
