Across Selkirk...Diane Heim

What will you be doing in your new position?

I am a Registered Nurse and I will be instructing two on-line courses and assisting in the Lab for the HCA program. I started with Selkirk College Dec 12, but will not be finished in my present job until Dec 22. At which time I have taken an LOA.

Tell us about your family.

My Husband Tony and I have four grown children living throughout BC, Alberta, and Washington State. Our pride and joy is our only grandchild (so far). Fabian who just so proudly turned five.

What were you doing, career wise, before you accepted this position?

I have worked for Interior Health for 20 years in the Mental Health and Addictions. I worked several years as a Case Manager facilitating a Day Hospital Program at KBRH and more recently co-facilitating the Addictions Day Treatment Program running here in Castlegar at the Health Centre.

I have most recently been involved in the setting up of the new Opiate Replacement Therapy Clinic also new to the Castlegar Health Centre. I worked a few years as a Nurse Educator, and for several years I was a supervisor for the Options for Sexual Health Clinic in Trail.

For many years I was a Trainer for CPI and was involved in training staff in Code White.

What is your educational background?

Secretarial Certificate from Selkirk College Business School (can you believe it!!!) Yup typed on a Manual Typewriter…haha…maybe I should put that under my biggest accomplishment! I also have a Registered Nurse Diploma taken here at Selkirk College (more years ago than I care to mention) and an Advanced Diploma in Mental Health Nursing from Mount Royal College.

What is your favourite thing to do outside of work?

Spending time at our cabin in New Denver and kayaking on Slocan Lake. Stained glass is another hobby. Oh yeah … I snowboard but think I’m outgrowing that … starting to hurt when I fall … I am learning to play the guitar … it is safer but don’t think my husband likes the noise … told me I can’t get an electric one … hmmm.

Any interesting accomplishments that you would like us to know about?

My proudest accomplishment was building my own wood stitch and glue kayak. And It floats!!!
