Castlegar Campus Boiler Replacement Project

Important Notice for Castlegar Employees

The original boiler plant used for space heating at the Castlegar campus is being replaced. This very necessary infrastructure upgrade will both add to the quality of student and staff life and significantly reduce the college’s carbon foot print.

The project requires demolition work of the old boilers and surrounding piping systems as well as cutting and welding of metal for the new installations.  A by-product of this work are welding and cutting fumes which can migrate into areas outside of the boiler room where the work is taking place.   The odour from these fumes has had some impact on spaces outside the boiler room, most notably the campus bookstore.   The bookstore has had to curtail and eventually temporarily relocate operations due to the construction odour.

While the college is assured that these odours are benign and pose no health risk to staff and students, comfort and safety are a priority and further steps are being taken to reduce odours.  These steps include the installation of carbon activated air filters for the supply air to the Library block as well as additional ventilation within the boiler room itself.

College administration wishes to apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

In the short term, we have moved the Bookstore operation into the Pit area.  Bookstore staff will be focusing on filling orders for students who are waiting for books for distance education courses which require to be mailed out to them.  As well, the staff will be focusing on filling phone orders that we have received to date.

The Booklist has been posted and we are also assisting students who are coming directly to the college by way of confirming the books they require for next week and answering any questions.  If the students would like to leave their name, student number, and list of books, we are willing to prepackage these orders for pick up next week with the available supplies.  We are also willing to accept prepayment.

We understand that staff will require supplies from the Bookstore.  However, our focus over the next couple of days will be on assisting the students.   We appreciate your patience with us.  We hope to have the Bookstore fully operational by Friday.  We do have coffee and tea available in the Pit.  To assist the staff, please have the exact change ready for payment ($1.50).
