International Policy Changes, Labour Adjustments and What Comes Next
—From the desks of the Executive Leadership Team
Changes by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) affecting international student recruitment are causing uncertainty around enrolment numbers, labour adjustments and how Selkirk College will navigate the changing post-secondary landscape.
We understand that the challenges facing the college and the impacts they will have on programming and employment are taking a toll on all of us who strive so hard to ensure students are successful in their outcomes. This is a shared anxiety that reaches every corner of our college community.
We are taking a careful, considered approach to decision-making to ensure our response is based on accurate and up-to-date information. The college is working closely with union leadership to communicate developments and updates in a timely manner. This is a fluid situation, and the path forward is complex, but together, we will continue to focus on our core mandate of serving our students and communities with high-quality, accessible programs that align with local labour markets. We are undertaking advocacy efforts for a more region-specific approach from IRCC. This advocacy includes other colleges, community partners, the provincial government and our local elected representatives.
We have compiled a list of frequently asked questions and provided answers. These FAQs will be updated as new information becomes available.
It is difficult to navigate these challenges, but the importance of a supportive community within the college is paramount. Though not easy in times like this, patience and understanding will be key to helping the college get through this, implement our new strategy and grow back guided by our mission and vision.
