Accessibility Services Values Respect, Diversity, Openness, Collaboration and Caring
The Selkirk College team supporting students with disabilities has changed its name from Disabilities Services to Accessibility Services for Students with Disabilities in a move that reflects a societal shift happening Canada-wide.
There will be no change to the exceptional services offered to students with disabilities at Selkirk College. The new name, in fact, more clearly reflects what’s already taking place.
“We feel that this name change more clearly reflects the work we do with our students at Selkirk College,” says Accessibility Coordinator Myriam Spencer. “Our goal is to help facilitate and coordinate an accessible learning experience for students with disabilities at the college. We work with students, instructors, and staff collaboratively to maximize students with disabilities access to our programs and services. So, the focus of our office and our work is very much on accessibility not on disability.”
Through this name change, Selkirk College is part of a shift that is growing Canada-wide. Many offices have already changed their name or are in the process of doing so.
As part of Student Support Services, the Accessibility Services team helps students make the most of their learning experience as the college recognizes that the impact of disabilities can make attending post-secondary more challenging.
Disabilities can include a range of medical and health situations that may be permanent or temporary. They can be visible or invisible.
Accessibility Services works with the student and their instructors to remove barriers, provide access to reasonable academic accommodations and learning supports. They also are a campus resource for accessibility related issues related to students with disabilities.
“We encourage instructors, faculty, and staff to contact the Accessibility Coordinator on your campus if you would like to learn more about our services, have questions or would like to discuss how you can support students in your class with disabilities,” says Spencer. “We will also be working to put resources on MySelkirk for faculty and staff to access, so look for this in the near future.”
