Board of Governors Announces 2013 Awards

The Selkirk College Board of Governors approved 2013 Distinguished Educator, Distinguished Alumnus, and Honorary Diploma awards at the their meeting on March 26th. Strong nominations were received in all three categories, making the final decision very challenging. The three recipients were contacted.


Distinguished Alumnus - Mr. Anthony Crosfield

Anthony is a distinguished graduate of the Hairdressing program in 1985. For almost 30 years, Anthony has gone on to establish a world-recognized artistic and business career that has resulted in international competition success, experience in film, television, and editorial work. He also teaches for Wella Professionals and is a member of Nioxin’s Global Design team, among many other and varied roles. Despite his busy life, Anthony finds time to serve on the Selkirk College program advisory committee for Hairdressing and Esthetics, which he has done for a number of years. Anthony routinely returns to Nelson to give workshops for students, and his business takes a number of practicum students each year.

Distinguished Educator - Dr. Gordon Turner

Dr. Gordon Turner retired from Selkirk College in 2012 after 32 years as a faculty member. He taught composition, creative writing, literature, technical writing. During his career, Gord was the recipient of SCOPE Awards, two NISOD awards and numerous other meritorious service awards. Gord was recognized by students and peers alike for his skillful instruction and professionalism. A published author, Gord was instrumental in developing the Creative Writing program and was responsible for organizing and hosting Canada Council supported reading series at the College. He served a term as Department Head of the Languages and Literature department, and a number of other capacities through committee work. In the community, Gord has been a long serving municipal councillor and member of Rotary. He has been, and is, a superb ambassador for the College in the community.

Honorary Diploma in Business Administration - Ms. Darlene Kalawsky

This award celebrates a lengthy and important contribution that Darlene has made to the College while making numerous contributions to the wider community. Darlene served on the College’s Foundation Board beginning in 1997 to 2006 (Chair from 2002 to 2004). In that role she made a considerable impact to the development of the College’s endowment and fundraising goals, including the Festival of Trees, establishing the Auto Dealers Bursary, the Mir Centre for Peace, the Darlene Kalawsky Digital Arts and New Media scholarship. Along the way Darlene has organized College fundraisers such as golf tournaments, teas, Music Feeds and a host of other events. Did we mention all the other community volunteerism that Darlene does? Rotary, Castlegar & District Library, SPCA, Communities in Bloom, BC Seniors Games.. the list goes on!
