Message from the President: Development of the 2014-2015 Selkirk College Budget

Dear Selkirk College Employees,

Management Committee has recently initiated the annual process of developing the budget for the college for the 2014-2015 year. I am sending out the attached document (see link below) to provide information about the context, framework, current analysis and timelines for the budget development process this year.

As many of you will know, we continue to operate in a funding and fiscal environment across the BC public post-secondary system where budgeting is universally challenging. I know how much concern this creates for everyone. Securing appropriate, sustainable and predictable funding for our college from the Provincial Government is one of my constant companions and preoccupations.

As you will see from the attached, we are currently forecasting a significant deficit between anticipated costs and predicted revenues for the 2014-2015 year. There is still further analysis and decision-making to complete in the coming weeks and months. However, the message from employees in past years has strongly encouraged information as early as possible, so this is what I am sending you now. We will update the college community as more information becomes available.

In the meantime, I invite and encourage all employees to get involved and to engage with your colleagues and co-workers within your schools, departments, and divisions to review your plans for providing programs and services in 2014-2015. I also encourage you to have a conversation with your supervisor to make sure your ideas and concerns are heard as we work to balance planned expenditures with anticipated revenues for the 2014-2015 year.

I will be scheduling employee meetings at all campuses and learning centres in the coming weeks to speak directly with you about this and anything else of concern.

And... as always I want to personally thank all of you, whatever your role, for the countless contributions each of you are making to what continues to be a very successful and exciting year at Selkirk College.

With much regard,

Angus Graeme
