Start to Finish - Research Funding
Successful Research Funding Proposals
Offered through the Applied Research & Innovation Centre at Selkirk College, this workshop will tackle key issues and provide tools, approaches and strategies to address the challenging “Start to Finish” of successful research funding proposals.
Targeting both beginners and experienced individuals, it is designed to help participants acquire strategies, tools and hands-on practice for developing competitive research funding proposals.

- Applied Research & Innovation Centre, Castlegar Campus
The workshop addresses central aspects of research proposal development, including understanding RFAs; developing ideas, research plans and budgets; and crafting a competitive proposal. The topics include:
- Planning to Apply (Laying the groundwork)
- Mapping the Proposal (Finding the framework & developing the plan)
- Drafting the Proposal (Finding the superstructure & translating to text)
- Refining the Proposal (Reviewing, reworking, crafting the style, finalizing)
Workshop Facilitator: Dr. Dawn McArthur
A research development pioneer, McArthur has 30 years of university research and teaching experience. Following her graduate and postdoctoral training, McArthur became Senior University Grants Facilitator at SFU, where she worked with faculty from all disciplines.
In 2003, she was recruited to the UBC-affiliated BC Children’s Hospital Research Institute (BCCHR) to establish the Research & Technology Development Office (RTDO). The RTDO's mandate is to enhance research excellence, capacity and competitiveness of BCCHR's large multidisciplinary health research community. Since 2003, the RTDO has helped bring in more than $400 million in external research funding.
McArthur has worked with researchers from all fields, and has an excellent record for funding success as well as extensive knowledge of the mandates of provincial, national and international funding agencies. She has given many workshops locally, nationally, and internationally at colleges, universities, and conferences on topics related to development of competitive research proposals and funding applications.
