Selkirk College Welcomes True Pioneer

Enjoy an evening with eminent scholar Dr. Leroy Little Bear: professor emeritus and special advisor to the President's Office at the University of Lethbridge, Blackfoot scientist, Member of the Blackfoot Confederacy, Husband, Grandfather, and friend to all.

Dr. Little Bear is an internationally renowned scholar at the forefront of indigenous education. He recently received the Alberta Order of Excellence, is the recipient of a National Aboriginal Achievement Award, holds honourary doctoral degrees from the University of Lethbridge and the University of Northern British Columbia, is recognized an Eminent Scholar in his community and has received an Urban Aboriginal Lifetime Achievement award from the Aboriginal Council of Lethbridge. The University of Lethbridge First Nation, Métis and Inuit Gathering Place, Iikaisskini, meaning "Low Horn," is named in his honour. On April 13, 2017, both him and his wife, Amethyst First Rider will be recognized for their lifetime contributions to the University of Lethbridge.

His curiosity regarding the intersections between Blackfoot ways of knowing and the nature of reality has fostered cutting-edge dialogues with renowned scientists and elders alike globally. Recognition of his tireless work in many indigenous nations, national and international leadership in education, treaty expertise, and constitutional analysis as well cutting edge science speaks to a lifelong commitment to reconciliation and reinforcement of indigenous identity and methodology. He is truly a pioneer and words are simply not enough to encompass all his achievements, delivered with humour, kindness, strength, wisdom and integrity, all attributes of an indigenous warrior.
