2012 Scope Awards Celebration

Join Us To Honour Our 2012 Scope Award Recipients

The Selkirk College SCOPE Awards Ceremony will take place in the Staff Lounge at the Castlegar campus on Thursday, September 27, from 5:00-7:00 pm. Refreshments will be served and all are welcome!

This year, five faculty have been recognized for Long-Term Exceptional Performance. The purpose of the SCOPE awards is to recognize and promote both long-term and innovative professional excellence. Faculty and staff are nominated for the awards by students and peers.

Jane Green

Jane Green, an instructor in the Classroom and Community Support Worker Program, has been recognized this year with a SCOPE Award for Long Term Exceptional Performance. 

Nominated by a student, Jane was described as “an exceptional teacher, innovator, passionate advocate, and innovative life coach”.  Another member of Jane’s class stated, “The most unique feature of Jane’s classes is her enthusiastic inclusion of a man, who has multiple profound disabilities, as a regular part of everyday classroom learning”.   After spending time in Jane’s class, one colleague observed Jane as being”an exceptional listener and very student-centered”.  Another stated that she has “created a learning environment that is all about inclusivity”. “In my experience,” wrote a student, “she is an exceptional woman”.

Colleagues and students alike commented on Jane’s work within the college on the Strategic Planning Committee, describing her “playful, colourful Tea for Two bags” used to encourage staff and community input and the follow-up prompting videos as yet another exemplary example of her creative energy.  Also, one community member described the Shelter Guides Home Share and Respite Care Training, that Jane spearheaded and worked with community members to develop , as “the first practical training ever offered specifically for home-share and respite care providers” which “will contribute greatly to our community by enhancing quality of life for many, many families and individuals in years to come”.

Garry Graham

Garry Graham, a Clay instructor in the Kootenay School of the Arts has been recognized with a SCOPE Award for Long Term Exceptional Performance.

Student feedback indicates Garry has had great success as an instructor. Students describe him as a teacher that “inspires creativity” and motivates them to give their best.  They find Garry supportive, kind, prepared and patient.   One group of students even nicknamed Garry “The Rock”.

Faculty and staff describe Garry as having extraordinary dedication to teaching, and as a “gifted instructor who is focused on excellence in studio practice”. Garry has been admired for effective leadership, student centeredness, and professionalism during the challenging changes over the past year.

Outside of the classroom, Gary has been recognized for maintaining his studio practice, for being the liaison for the donation of Bernard Leach pottery to the school and for supporting student exhibits.

Elizabeth Lund

Elizabeth Lund, a Chemistry instructor and University Arts and Science Coordinator has been recognized for long-term exceptional performance.

"Elizabeth Lund was nominated by a student – this student-initiated feedback indicates great success as a teacher.  One student described that Elizabeth was“…always available with helpful advice, kind words, or just an open ear, and a friendly smile.”  Elizabeth's hard work definitely did not go unnoticed or unappreciated by students.

Faculty and staff describe Elizabeth as a dedicated instructor and co-ordinator whose “…quiet and determined compassion for education, …mediation skills,… and creativity are constant reminders about how a community of educators needs to be with each other.”  External colleagues depicted Elizabeth as having “…remarkable intellectual energy, keen enthusiasm for science education, and professional, passionate advocacy for Selkirk College…”.  Well done, Dr. Lund!"

Ruth Dubois

Ruth Dubois is an instructor in the Nursing Program, has been recognized for long-term exceptional performance.

Colleagues describe Ruth as a “leader and inspiration” in writing an outstanding accreditation report for the CRNBC in January 2012.   They commend your efforts to bringing the faculty together and reaffirming their belief in the nursing program and its excellence.   Your peers see you as hard working, professional and dedicated to teaching and learning.

Students describe you as an exceptional instructor, student centered, up-to-date, dedicated  and caring.

David Feldman

David Feldman, a University Arts and Sciences Math instructor and SCFA President has been recognized for long-term exceptional performance.

Student feedback indicates your success as a teacher. Students find you dedicated, enthusiastic and knowledgeable, as well as “hilarious and kind.”  One student credits your ability to “make math class funny, entertaining, and incredibly educational” with his success in what was once his weakest subject.

Faculty and staff describe you as an unsung hero, a devoted instructor who makes countless contributions to the college, including your work as Chair of Education Council and Curriculum Committee, as a Learning Fellow, and now as president of SCFA.  One colleague described you by saying, “David is a real Renaissance man; he is interested in everything!”  You share your enthusiasm for music, dancing, hiking and learning with your students, your colleagues, and your community.  Recently, your efforts to save science courses were noticed by students, colleagues, and the community. After hearing you speak at the Board of Governor’s meeting, a student wrote, “I admired his steadfastness, diplomacy, and the clear devotion he has to Selkirk College and the education of students. It’s really heartening to see an individual so invested in their community and the betterment of this great institution.”
