Celebrating The Learner

Where Inclusion Is Valued & Celebrated

As a book of stories told by families, The Power of Knowing Each Other serves as a powerful vehicle for sharing the message about informal safeguards. The book features the creative and unique connections families have built with their family members who have a developmental disability and includes the story of Jeff La Fortune and his participation in the CCSW class for over 19 years.

A collaborative partner in the CCSW program and recipient of an Honorary Diploma in Human Services from Selkirk College, Jeff was on hand with his mother Cathy as she signed books and helped to give out cake.

Various speakers including Cathy La Fortune, Myriam Spencer, Jane Green and China Couture (Student Union Representative), moved the crowd expressing how caring connections within our communities keep them safe and happy.

As student volunteer Kathryn Kimmerly explained, “Having Jeff in the class gives us an opportunity for a real, experiential education. It brings inclusiveness into our classroom.”
